Freecell Solver has an option of using A* and so far it works very well
for most boards (solves faster than DFS and generates shorter solution
pathes). Of course, for every choice of A* weights, one can find boards in
which it works much worse than DFS, but there's always one choice of
weights that works well for every board. (from what I experienced)
So I would not rule out A* just by that.
