<<The Pulitzer Committee was disappointed. Can you (we) set some variable
that will automatically save each potential great work every, say, ten
seconds?>>
I'm using Outlook Express, and I haven't run across any such option.
Anyone out there happen to know of one?
<<Let me suggest this. Leave FcPro just as it is. It's a pioneering work,
admirible for what it was able to accomplish in its original form with its
apparent straightforward simplicity (I've glanced at the organization of the
original.)
One stub for the original.
Keep stubs for variations on FcPro - your double hash, for instance, and
others' experiments.
Stubs for FCS and PatSolve. More stubs for the many more that are coming.>>
Thanks for the kind words. But we have to get some terminology
straight. I think as far as "stubs" are concerned, we are doing the
equivalent of that (maybe). But double hash is now an inherent feature of
the Woods-Callan-Ettlinger solver in FcPro. Although we do have a
user-settable option to cancel it. Solver no. 1 in FcPro is what it as
been, now for a year or two, with a variety of options for various modes,
including pre-submission column permutation, since the solver itself treats
the columns in the sequence presented. I have no intentions of tinkering
with that solver any more. Solvers 2 and 3, FCS and Patsolve, exist in
their own areas as separate entities. There are some changes needed in
other modules to support the two additional solvers, but those changes are
elementary. It might be capable of being better modularized, but I don't
know as that would be worth the trouble.
<<I wouldn't want to do anything with FcPro .......>>
Yes, I understand that as far as your own solver is concerned, but if
there are other solvers "out there" you'd like to see incorporated to run
side-by-side with FCS and Patsolve, if you can find some way to get the word
out, either yourself directly or by someone else you know who'd like to do
the contact work, I'll be here.
Back to what will happen with FcPro, Mike Keller for the time being has
no intention of releasing the "Solver evaluation edition" of FcPro on his
own site. So far I've distributed it only privately. I have one FcPro user
using it now as a betatester. This fellow makes frequent use of the hot key
activation and really will benefit from having a solver he can trust, which
so far, with Patsolve, I have no reason to doubt its 100% integrity. He is
finding Patsolve, however, on the whole slower than the FcPro solver. As of
now, Patsolve does not deliver its solutions except to a file. FCS delivers
its solution, but 30% or so will not play back, although there too, the full
solution can be seen in a text file. My betatester friend has taken a look
at FCS, and has expressed admiration for the cleverness and brevity of some
of its solutions. I've told Shlomi I'd have no objection (and neither does
Mike K or Wilson C.) if Shlomi would like to post it on his website, but he
may be reluctant until it gets to the point where it can play back all
solutions. If I were to hear a great public demand for it, I could post it
on a website of my own, but I wouldn't do that if Shlomi preferred me not
to. But Bill, if you'd like a copy for yourself, I'd E-mail it to you
privately.
